Dr. Hanif Ghelandari in an Interview with Anatok News Agency:
A Look at the Era When Iran Was the Center of the Mathematical World
Dr. Hanif Ghelandari, Professor of the History of Science and Head of the Institute for the History of Science at the University of Tehran, in an interview with Anatok News Agency, discussed the golden age of mathematics in Islamic civilization. Citing the works of prominent mathematicians such as Khwarizmi, Khayyam, Kashani, Biruni, Buzjani, and Sizji, he identified the 3rd and 4th centuries AH (9th and 10th centuries CE) as the peak period of mathematics in Iran.
In this conversation, Dr. Ghelandari addressed the differences between mathematical problems in the past and today, computational tools across different eras, and the role of mathematicians' creativity in overcoming the limitations of their time. He also recommended al-Khwarizmi’s "Al-Jabr wa al-Muqabala" (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing) as one of the most influential texts in the evolution of mathematical science.
He emphasized that the history of science is not merely the study of biographies, but also involves the analysis and reconstruction of scientific traditions and narrating the trajectory of conceptual evolution in science.
