Signing of a Quadrilateral Cooperation Memorandum for the Revival of Kushyar Gilani's Scientific Heritage

In order to preserve and revive the scientific heritage of Kushyar Gilani and with the aim of holding the first International Conference on the History of Kushyar Gilani's Science, a quadrilateral cooperation memorandum was signed between the University of Gilan, the Municipality of Rasht, the Institute for the History of Science at the University of Tehran, and the Vice Presidency for Development and Planning of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. This conference is scheduled to be held in Farvardin (March/April) 1405 (2026) hosted by the University of Gilan.

This memorandum, with the goal of expanding scientific, research, and cultural cooperation and focusing on introducing and re-evaluating Kushyar Gilani's place in the history of science, outlines the cooperation frameworks between the signatory institutions in various fields. The main pillars of this memorandum include holding a biennial conference on the sciences and mathematics of the Islamic era, establishing public and specialized sections, founding the Kushyar Gilani Science Center and Observatory, promoting science at national and international levels, and honoring Iran's scientific luminaries.

Based on the terms of this cooperation, the signatory institutions will collaborate, utilizing their scientific, academic, and urban capacities, to strengthen research in the history of science, develop scientific-cultural activities, and enhance public awareness of Iran-Islamic scientific heritage.

Kushyar ibn Labban Gilani, a prominent Iranian scientist of the 4th and 5th centuries AH (10th-11th centuries CE), is considered one of the distinguished figures of the Islamic Golden Age. A native of Gilan, he left valuable works and achievements in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and geography, making significant contributions to the development of the exact sciences, particularly arithmetic, spherical trigonometry, and observational astronomy.

The signing of this memorandum can be evaluated as an effective step towards reviving Kushyar Gilani's scientific standing, strengthening studies in the history of science, and expanding scientific interactions among the country's academic and cultural institutions—an initiative that will pave the way for Iran's more active presence in the field of history of science studies at national and international levels.
