The Third Conference on Science in the Qajar Era, held to commemorate the centenary of the official adoption of the Solar Hijri (Persian) calendar in Iran, will be held on October 19–20, 2026 (27–28 Mehr 1405).

The Qajar period was an important era in the history of scientific and cultural developments in Iran. It was a period marked by both interaction and, at times, confrontation between emerging modern sciences and earlier scientific traditions. Efforts to understand and adopt new sciences, alongside the preservation and study of Iran's earlier scientific heritage, created a distinctive intellectual and scholarly environment.

One of the significant scientific developments of this period was the effort to organize and reform the Iranian calendar. This subject is particularly important in the history of science because of its connections with astronomy, calendrical calculations, and the administrative and social transformations of the Qajar era.

The Third Conference on Science in the Qajar Era will address various aspects of science and knowledge during this period. The conference will cover topics including:

  • Calendars and calendrical systems in the Qajar era
  • Astronomy in the Qajar era
  • Influential figures in the development and correction of the Solar Hijri calendar
  • Science policy and scientific institutions in the Qajar era
  • The emergence of modern humanities
  • Developments in the natural sciences, mathematics, and physics

The conference will be held with the participation and cooperation of academic and research institutions. The Iranian Institute of Philosophy (IRIP) will host the event in its Main Hall.

Date: October 19–20, 2026 (27–28 Mehr 1405)
